Silvaner is one of the most important white grape varieties in German viticultural history. From its debut in Germany in the second half of the 17th century through the mid-1960s, it was the most widely planted grape variety in Germany. At its peak, it was cultivated in ca. half of Germany’s total vineyard area. It replaced inferior grape varieties, including Elbling and Gutedel, until it was supplanted by the more prolific grape Müller-Thurgau. But Silvaner has made its comeback...…(260/1)
